Duration: 4'
Version for orchestra

"I grew up with it," says Louis Andriessen of the music of Darius Milhaud. "At home, this kind of music - and also that of other Frenchmen: Poulenc, for example - was, in a way, pitted against German music. My fondness for it has never diminished. I’m really attracted to Milhaud’s out-of-tune music, as though from folk musicians. Sure, you can get highfalutin about polytonality, but to me it’s just plain old out of tune."
When Milhaud died in 1974, Louis Andriessen was leader of De Volharding, a politically-motivated street orchestra. One of the ensemble’s most popular repertoire pieces was Milhaud’s La création du monde. Milhaud’s death inspired Andriessen to compose a short chorale-like piece as an ‘in memorium’, and De Volharding played it as an introduction to La création du monde. Specially for this concert, Louis Andriessen has arranged this six-voice composition for double woodwinds, brass, strings and piano.

Aad van der Ven
(translation: Jonathan Reeder)
