In the early sixties I lived in Italy for a year, and ever since then I have felt a strong bond with that country. In La Girò, a piece for violin and ensemble, I am musing about a composer I admire a lot: maestro Antonio Vivaldi. The title refers to Anna Girò, Vivaldi’s favourite singer who, together with her sister, lived in his house for some time. The piece would not have become the 'performance' it is without its dedicatee, the violinist Monica Germino. The soloist (La Girò, perhaps?) does not only play the violin. She also sings an Italian song, whispers and talks, tells stories and dreams. The ensemble consists of a small chamber orchestra, with an added piano, harp, cimbalom and some percussion. The actual musical drama takes place in the fourth, slow part. ; nl Toen Enzo Restagno mij vroeg een stuk te schrijven voor het MITO-festival, dat jaarlijks in Milaan en Turijn plaatsvindt, was ik vereerd. In de vroege jaren zestig heb ik een jaar in Italië gewoond en sinds die tijd voel ik een sterke band met dat land. La Girò is een stuk voor viool en ensemble met in gedachte een componist die ik bewonder: Antonio Vivaldi. De titel verwijst naar Anna Girò, Vivaldi’s favoriete zangeres die samen met haar zus bij hem in huis heeft gewoond. Zonder de violiste Monica Germino zou het stuk niet de ‘performance’ zijn die het nu geworden is. De soliste (La Girò, misschien?) speelt niet alleen viool. Ze zingt ook een Italiaans liedje, ze fluistert en praat, vertelt verhalen en dromen. Het ensemble bestaat uit een klein kamerorkest, aangevuld met piano, harp, cymbalom en wat slagwerk. Het stuk heeft vier delen. De eerste drie vormen samen een soort concertino. Het feitelijke muzikale drama speelt zich af in het vierde, langzame deel. Het werk is opgedragen aan Monica Germino.
