Performance instructions:
Everything should be loco: played in the notated octave. The entrances of the different voices and the individual tempos are free, keeping in mind that the overall character of the piece should be slow.
Dynamics are free, but should be balanced overall, without any noticeable swells and changes throughout. Avoid swells and changes of dynamics within a single note. Be rigorous in maintaining the same dynamic: no crescendos into or at the beginning of notes. No diminuendos at the end of any notes or phrases unless written.
Play legatissimo, strictly without vibrato and without any strong attacks or accents. Connect all the notes seamlessly, ‘glue' each note to the next. The result will be a pure, sustained sound.
Open note-heads are longer notes, closed note heads are shorter, with rests having the length of one open note head. The number of repetitions is free for each performer, and the piece ends when the last player finishes the coda.
