en Duration 16'<br/>For more than twenty years I have enjoyed a strong friendship with the Bang on a Can All-Stars and the Bang on a Can composers. Since then, the All-Stars have played the pieces of mine that are more or less suited for their instrumentation, and they have done so with brilliance and with so much commitment that I have walked around at least ten years with the intention to compose especially for them. However, it took a long time to find a solution, because I found the combination of their instruments rather difficult: 19th century strings with contemporary instruments like guitar and percussion. I found a way when I decided to see this instrumentation as an advantage, and I was supported by a plan with the artist Marijke van Warmerdam. We decided to make a kind of contemporary “Pictures of an Exhibition”: short pieces of music to accompany video clips. This resulted in Life -- four short compositions which combine late romantic ‘European’ music with hip ‘American’ repetitive music. This combination is stretched by the use of cross-references, parallel with what happens in the four films: every film is completely independent, but contains allusions to the others.<br/>Louis Andriessen<br/>Louis Andriessen – Marijke van Warmerdam - Life, 2010<br/><br/>The new film entitled 'Life' (2010) by Marijke van Warmerdam opens with leaves being lifted up and blown along, carried by gusts of wind. Neither buildings nor people can influence these things, taking place in a deserted industrial environment. A lone feather is whisked away on a sudden breeze.<br/><br/>An elderly couple sits in contemplation on a bench amidst green grass in a late afternoon sunset. The camera tracks in a circular motion above and beneath them, sometimes in a distinct close-up, then viewed from a distance and above again. They are observed in the autumn of their life.<br/><br/>The slats of closed Venetian blinds move slightly. Suddenly a hand slides across the blinds allowing light into the room. An uncontrollable burst of light enters.<br/><br/>Drops of condensation roll down a window-pane before a hand wipes them away, clearing the view and revealing the relaxed elderly couple in the distance. Their existence far away emphasizes the notion of temporality and the end of time.

In die tijd hebben de All-Stars alles van mij gespeeld dat een beetje bij hun bezetting past. Hun spelen is zo briljant en toegewijd, dat ik al een jaar of tien jaar rondliep met het plan om iets voor ze te schrijven. Het heeft lang geduurd voor ik een oplossing vond voor een belangrijk probleem. Ik vond de combinatie van instrumenten nogal moeilijk: 19e-eeuwse strijkers met eigentijdse instrumenten als gitaar en slagwerk. Ik vond een uitweg toen ik besloot die bezetting als een voordeel te zien en dat werd nog versterkt door het plan om met beeldend kunstenaar Marijke van Warmerdam samen te werken. We besloten een soort hedendaagse “Schilderijententoonstelling” te maken: korte stukken muziek bij video clips. Het resultaat was Life – vier korte composities die laat-Romantische ‘Europese’ muziek combineren met hippe ‘Amerikaanse’ repetitieve muziek. Deze combinatie wordt versterkt door het gebruik van dwarsverbanden, net als in de vier films: elke film is volkomen onafhankelijk, maar bevat verwijzingen naar de andere films.<br/><br/>Louis Andriessen
