Duration: 6’
For: violin
Commissioned by Davina van Wely Violin Competition
Première: The Hague, 3 February 2007

The title Raadsels (Riddles) alludes to the French titles of the three parts: Prière, Vexations, and Harmonies.
Why those titles? That is the riddle.
The piece relates to Xenia, another composition for violin solo, which I composed a year earlier. The three parts in both pieces have the same ratio: 4:5:3, but Riddles is 2/3 shorter in time, just 6 minutes. This is because it was written for an international competition for young violinists.
One cue to unravel the riddle: Vexations you probably know as a piano piece by Erik Satie.

Louis Andriessen
