Shared memory is a two-part invention for oboe and violin based upon the first six bars of the b minor Fugue from the Wohltemperierte Klavier I by J.S. Bach. The theme, the countersubject and the second entrance meander through the two instruments. The first three and the last two notes of the theme are left out. The tempo is extremely slow: MM quarter note=24.
It was Tony Fell who brought me to the last notes written by Igor Stravinsky on manuscript: an unfinished viola part for his arrangement for string quartet of the preceding Prelude in b minor from the same volume.

Louis Andriessen
December 011
