For: 2 tenors, 2 baritones, children's voice and large ensemble
Text: Lucebert
Written for the Holland Festival 1996

Première: 7 June 1996 - Theater Carré Amsterdam - ASKO-ensemble, Nederlands Blazers
Ensemble, Nieuw Ensemble and Schönberg Ensemble, cond. Reinbert de Leeuw
(Holland Festival 1996)

The work's title "The last day" refers to a poem by the Dutch poet Lucebert (1924-1994), sung by four male voices, dealing with issues of war and death. The monumental mechanistic destruction of armed conflict, represented by relentlessly independent polymetric layers, is contrasted with the simplicity and innocence of the Brabantine folk song for the boy solo, who questions the skull of his dead mother about the hereafter.
