en Duration: 5'
For: guitar

An early work dedicated to his wife, bass guitarist Jeanette Yanikian. Part one was created as a birthday present and the two other parts were added a year later. Louis Andriessen has once remarked that the piece actually consists of three blues works.
Triplum is not written according to strict serialist rules but it does have a dodecaphonic character. The piece makes high demands on the player who is forced to repress the instinctive urge to make the most of overtones. The score stipulates scrupulous observance of rests which requires a high degree of virtuosity. You have to able to play very powerfully; as far as this is concerned it's a typical Andriessen composition.
Andriessen shows great insight into the dynamic possibilities of the instrument, although Triplum is his only work for the classical guitar; in later, monumental, works he confined himself to the electric guitar and electric bass guitar.
