Woodpecker has been written in 1999. It was the required piece for the Tromp competition in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, which was devoted to solo percussion in the year 2000. But the first reason to write it was a request of the American marimba player Nancy Zeltsman, whom I met in Princeton in the mid-nineties, when I was teaching Composition at the university. In the garden in Princeton we heard several woodpeckers drumming all the time. Then, back in Holland, armed with recordings of American woodpeckers, I made a piece based on canon techniques for an extended marimba: there are six woodblocks and five templeblocks added to the instument, all approximately tuned.
While composing the work in Holland, I had intense working sessions with the marimba player Tatiana Koleva, who assisted me in solving technical problems.
The piece lasts about 8 minutes.

L.A.
