The melody is a pop song that no-one will recognize.<br/>The ensemble is divided into two groups: the wind and strings play the sustained melody in chorale-like four-part harmony, and the rest of the instruments – vibraphone, marimba and piano – play increasingly fast staccato chords. The two groups play in canons.<br/>Zilver is a part of a series of chamber music pieces named after a type of physical matter.: Hout (‘wood’) is the first, and Zilver (‘silver’) is the second. The title also refers to the two silver instruments – flute and vibraphone – which start and end the piece.<br/><br/>Louis Andriessen

Een langgerekte, langzame melodie, gecombineerd met een snel gespeelde versie van dezelfde melodie. Blazers en strijkers spelen de langzame versie van deze melodie - een popsong die niemand zal herkennen - en daarbij spelen ze vierstemmig, koraalachtig. De drie andere instrumenten (vibrafoon, marimba en piano) spelen staccato accoorden, die in de loop van het stuk sneller en sneller worden. Het ensemble is dus eigenlijk verdeeld in twee groepen, die in combinatie canons spelen.<br/>Zilver lijkt een nieuw deel te zijn in een serie kamermuziekwerken die naar bepaalde materiaalsoorten zijn vernoemd: de compositie Hout was er al. Misschien slaat de titel ook op het feit dat twee zilveren instrumenten - fluit en vibrafoon - het stuk inleiden en afsluiten.<br/><br/>Louis Andriessen
