Louis Andriessen (1939–2021) was one of the most beloved and influential composers in the recent history of the Royal Conservatoire. As a teacher at the institution where he had once studied, he played a key role in creating a unique composition culture that has left its mark on both the current faculty and the international contemporary music scene. During the concert, students and faculty of the Royal Conservatoire will perform several works by Andriessen, followed by a screening of Keizersgrachtshuffle, a film capturing the essence of Louis’ home and workspace at the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam.
The Louis Andriessen Studio at the Royal Conservatoire
Over the years, hundreds of students climbed the steep stairs to Louis Andriessen’s legendary studio at Keizersgracht 740 in Amsterdam. His signature words, Hier moet gewerkt worden, inspired Monica Germino and the Louis Andriessen Foundation to bring his workspace back to life at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. Not a static, museum-like space, but a place for active work and learning. The Bechstein piano at which he composed, his worktable, the family’s historic cabinet, where generations of Andriessens stored their scores, along with his books, art, and iconic electric pencil sharpener, are all tangible reminders of his creative life.
Thanks to the many hands that helped archive and organize Andriessen’s extensive collection of books and materials, his workspace—relocated to where he taught for over 40 years—can now inspire new generations of composers.
The studio houses a complete collection of his printed scores, generously donated by the publishers Boosey & Hawkes and Donemus. Students can study a score in the studio and then cross the street to the Netherlands Music Institute, where Louis’ annotated books are stored and organized by composition. Books were essential to Louis’ creative process, as reflected in the extensive annotations, including sketches and notes.
Connected to the studio is the Louis Andriessen Chair for visiting composers in residence, who can work with students on their compositions and projects. The Louis Andriessen Studio also offers them the space to focus on their own creative work, surrounded by Louis’ legacy.

Louis Andriessen, die in 2021 overleed, was een van de meest geliefde en invloedrijke componisten uit het recente verleden van het Koninklijk Conservatorium. Als docent aan het instituut waar hij zelf ooit studeerde, was hij medeverantwoordelijk voor het creëren van een unieke compositiecultuur, die haar stempel heeft gedrukt op zowel de huidige compositiefaculteit als het internationale hedendaagse muziekleven. Tijdens het concert worden verschillende werken van Andriessen uitgevoerd door studenten en docenten van het KC en wordt de film Keizersgrachtshuffle vertoond, een impressie van Louis’ huis en werkkamer aan de Amsterdamse Keizersgracht.
De Louis Andriessen Studio in het Koninklijk Conservatorium
In de loop der jaren klommen honderden studenten de steile trappen op voor hun lessen in Louis Andriessens legendarische studio aan de Keizersgracht 740. ‘Hier moet gewerkt worden’— bekende woorden — dienden als inspiratie voor Monica Germino en de Louis Andriessen Stichting om zijn werkplek opnieuw tot leven te wekken in het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. De vleugel waaraan hij zijn stukken componeerde, zijn werktafel, de uit zijn familie afkomstige partiturenkast, de iconische elektrische puntenslijper: het zijn tastbare herinneringen aan hoe het was.
Dankzij de vele handen die hebben geholpen bij het archiveren en ordenen van Andriessens uitgebreide collectie boeken en materialen, kan zijn werkplek, verplaatst naar daar waar hij meer dan veertig jaar lesgaf, nieuwe generaties componisten inspireren.
De studio biedt onderdak aan de complete collectie van zijn gedrukte partituren, geschonken door de uitgeverijen Boosey & Hawkes en Donemus. Studenten kunnen een partituur in de studio bekijken en de straat oversteken naar het Nederlands Muziek Instituut, waar Louis’ geannoteerde boeken zijn ondergebracht en per compositie geordend. Boeken waren essentieel voor Louis’ werkwijze, getuige de uitgebreide annotaties, inclusief schetsen en aantekeningen.
Verbonden aan de studio is de Louis Andriessen Chair voor visiting composers in residence die voor een bepaalde periode in huis zijn om in de Louis Andriessen Studio met studenten aan hun stukken of projecten te werken maar ook in alle rust eigen werk kunnen componeren omgeven door Louis’ legacy.
